BAND-IN-A-BOX SOUNBLASTER/ADLIB VERSION HELP FILE
********************************************************
BAND.EXE is the name of the program
The Standard Edition consists of the program with 24 styles
and 24 demo chord progressions named after each style.
The Professional Edition has an additional 50+ styles (total 75+).
All versions of Band-in-a-Box are copyrighted and may not be distributed
without permission from PG Music Inc.
There are 4 sections to this on-line help file
1. Quick "how to use" section
2. Overview of program
3. List of valid chords accepted by program
4. Tutorial
( BB.EXE is a different program and is the MIDI version of Band-in-a-Box
If you have a MIDI system (MPU 401 ) you should use the BB.EXE program
and not the BAND.EXE . )
This is the help file for the SoundBlaster/AdLib version of
Band-in-a-Box . ( It is an ASCII file called BANDHELP.BB )
To use the program you require a SoundBlaster/AdLib or compatible
card.
The Band-in-a-Box program is an automatic musical accompaniment
program, providing professional quality accompaniment of 3 instruments-
bass, drums and piano. This means that you have a built in jazz/rock
combo inside your PC , willing to play any song in any style , in any
key at any tempo - willing to "back you up" for hours with no complaints !
You just type in the chords to any song , using standard chord symbols
such as C or Fm7 or C13b9#11/Bb . The screen is pre-divided into beats
and bars. You may enter 4 chords per bar ( 1 per note ) .
You then pick a style from among 24 built in styles (jazz/pop etc. )
or pick a user style from disk ( files ending in .STY ).
After specifying a few things like tempo/ song title / looping points
for the song you press play <F4 key>. The program automatically
generates an arrangement of your chords in your style .
Songs are saved to disk as .SG? files . These are tiny files less than
1 K , so you can get literally thousands of your songs onto your hard disk.
There's lots you can do as the song is playing :
- pressing F1 during playback provides a help screen listing all functions
available during playback .
- playalong drums QWERTYU keys
- playalong melody using "intelligent playalong" feature
asdfghjkl;'
zxcvbnm,./
Caps Lock increase octave
Shift key also increase octave
This one is Fun !
Using the bottom 2 rows of the keyboard - play along
with the song - don't worry - you can't hit any wrong notes !
The intelligence of the program makes sure that what you play
sounds good !
There are a few different modes of the intelligent playalong .
F2 Scale ( non intelligent )
F3 Intelligent Soloing mode ( Pop/Jazz/Country)
When playing along in intelligent Soloing mode use either the
bottom row (chord tones ) or the top row (extensions like 9th 11th)
F4 Rock scale soloing
You can change playalong modes during playback. The program
defaults to mode F3 - the intelligent soloing mode .
Some of the rock styles default to the F4 Rock scale though .
- change tempo [ ] { } keys
- overall volume control <F9> <F10>
- individual instrument volume control
o p playalong instrument volume
SHIFT O P Chording instrument volume
ALT o p Bass volume
Ctrl o p Drum volume
- change instruments (patch changes)
0-9 Playalong instrument change
SHIFT 0-9 Chording instrument change
ALT 0-9 Bass Instrument change
You may use the Band-in-a-Box manual provided with the program.
This manual was written for the MIDI version of the program. So you
get to ignore all of the info concerning setting up the program to
work with synthesizers/MIDI - because the BAND.EXE works automatically
with the SoundBlaster and you don't need MIDI or Synthesizers for this
version .
All you do is :
( if you have a hard drive )
1. Make a new subdirectory on your hard disk called bb
C: md\bb
1. copy all files to hard drive
Copy *.* c:\bb
2. run the program by typing Band <ENTER>
3. Move around the screen with cursor keys
4. Use the pull down menus by holding down the ALT key and the
first letter of the Pull down menu .
5. Type in chords to any song
The #s on the screen on bar #s . PageUp/Down to change pages
The highlighted cell is where your chords will go. It moves
2 notes at a time . You may enter 2 chords per cell which
means that you cab enter 4 chords per bar .
example chords C Fm7 C7b9 Cmaj9 F#13 Ab9#11 Cm7/Bb
*** THERE IS A COMPLETE LISTING OF VALID CHORDS AT THE END OF
THIS FILE YOU CAN PageDown TO GET TO IT ******
To get 2 chords in
a cell - use a comma ie Cm7,F7
To blank a cell use the <SPACEBAR>
To get a chord on 2nd part of cell only
<SPACEBAR><COMMA> chord name
6. TAB key gets you to settings at top of screen.
You can set info like title/tempo/looping points/Key from here
7. Select a style from the Pull Down menus or select a user style
from the F9 key .
8. Play your song by pressing the F4 Key
9. Playalong with the song using intelligent playalong of melody
or drums (see above )
10.There is a number of demo chord progressions that come with
the program- one for each style. It is a good idea to load in these
songs (using F3 key ) and Play them (using F4 key) to get an idea
of what each style sounds like.
The demo songs are conveniantly titled by the style that they are
in ie SALSA.SGU is a song in Salsa Style .
Songs have the extension .SG? where the ? is the style # of the
song with 1-9 and a-o being the 24 built in styles and
.SGU are songs saved with a user created style .
eg. MySong.SG1 saved as style #1 = Jazz Swing
MySong.SGA saved as style#10 = Shuffle Rock
MySong.SGU saved with a User Style
User created styles are saved with extensions of .STY
ex AFRICAN.STY is a User created style called AFRICAN
11.Create a Standard MIDI file by <F6> key
You would do this if you have a sequencer program and want
to Edit the music produced by Band-in-a-Box . Make sure
that your sequencer is current enough to read in Standard
Midi Files which end with .MID extension .
12.Blank the worksheet by <ALT> B or pull down menu EDIT Blank
13.<F10> to quit .
The Professional Edition of the program comes with an additional
51+ styles - all 51+ may be edited (SoundBlaster users can
only edit the drums- MIDI version can edit bass and piano too )
The editable styles are called "User Defined Styles" and are named
with extension .STY 22 of the styles are User Defined Style
versions of the Built in styles - they are
identified by naming beginning with Z
ie. Z_JAZZSW.STY is User Defined Style version of the built in
style Jazz Swing . Note that these Z styles are similar but
not identical to the built in ones - just made with the same
style in mind . The other 30+ styles on the Professional Edition
are brand new styles eg. AFRICAN.STY would be African User Defined
Style.

SECTION 2
INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM
Band-In-A-Box (version 4) is a MIDI program for IBM compatible
computers with an SoundBlaster compatible card or MIDI MPU401
interface . The program
provides automatic accompaniment of bass, piano chording, and
drum parts in a wide variety of popular styles of music
(total of 24 including Jazz swing ,Rock ,Country, Ethnic and more ).
This program was designed and programmed by a musician. The concept
is to provide the fastest means possible to provide a complete
piano, bass and drum accompaniment to any song .
To play a song all the program requires is :
- the chords of the song ( as typed in by the user onto
the screen using standard chord symbols-eg:C13b9 )
and - the form of the song (ie. the looping points for the chorus
to begin and end , number of choruses to play , tag ending)
and - part markers placed throughout the song to indicate new
parts and locations for drum fills.
and - the desired style (chosen by the user from a menu of
24 available styles )
A typical song may be entered in about 2 minutes . This
allows the user to quickly build up a large library of songs
in many styles of music .
Examples of situations where the program is most useful include:
1. Playalong at home using the computer's keyboard
2. Playalong/SingAlong at home playing your guitar etc.
3. Educational - see all the notes being played , learn about chords
4. Flexible/Expandable/Compatible - as the program is also
available as a MIDI version , if your system grows to MIDI your
songs and styles will still all work as ALL FILES ARE COMPATIBLE
IN MIDI AND NON MIDI. ALSO FILES ARE COMPATIBLE BETWEEN
THE IBM ATARI AND MAC VERSIONS OF BAND-IN-A-BOX . So if your
friend has an Atari - you can send your song to him that you
made on the IBM and it will play on his/her computer !

SECTION 4 TUTORIAL FOR SOUNDBLASTER/ADLIB COMPATIBLES
*******************************************************
Tutorial :
1. Start up the program by typing Band at the C:\bb prompt
( assuming that you have loaded all the files to C:\bb subdirectory )
2. Load in a Demo Song of your choice from the Demo chord progressions
supplied with the program .
LET'S LOAD BOSSA.SG4 ...
Hit the <F3> key to get a menu of all songs available .
Let's explore the File Selector window that pops up .
From the menu of all songs you use cursor keys or PageUp/Down
to move around all of the songs .
Also the End key takes you quickly to the last item , which isn't
a song but is a special icon that allows you to move between
different subdirectories .Press ENTER key over this last icon and
then you can move up or down between levels of subdirectories .
Once you pick a song from a new subdirectory - you will automatically
be there when you look next time. You probably don't have any
songs in other directories at the moment so will get a No Files
message .
Anyways , find your Bossa.SG4 song , move the highlight bar over it
and press <ENTER> . The song will load in to the screen now .
Press F4 to play the song. The song will start playing , initially
giving you a 2 bar drum count in .Then the music will start .
As its playing you can do lots of things , buts lets review the
PlayAlong basics
( these are described in detail near the top of this file and
are also summarized by the Help screen available by the F1 key
during playback. )
Press [ or ] to change tempo by 5
Press { or } to change tempo by 20
use the 0 to 9 keys to change the playalong instrument
eg. 2=organ 3=jazz guitar 4=Elec.Piano 5=vibes
Shift 0 to 9 - to change the chording instrument
Alt 0 to 9 to change the Bass instrument.
F9 and F10 to change overall volume .
o and p to change volume of playalong
Shift o and p to change volume of Chording
Alt o and P to change volume of Bass
Ctrl o and p to change volume of Drums
Now , playalong !!
Using the Bottom two rows of the computer's keyboard , start
playing keys .
First use the bottom row zxcvbnm,./ keys
Whatever note you play will be adjusted by the intelligence of
the program , so will sound good . The Bottom row is mainly
chord tones whereas the 2nd row is more interesting tones like
9ths , 11ths and 13ths of the chords .
If you want to revert to a regular scale you can do this by
pressing F2 function Key . F3 gets you back to the intelligent
mode. F4 key gets you to a rock scale , not much use in bossa
nova but useful in heavy rock, blues etc.
As you're playing , you can cahnge ocatves by the Caps Lock key
or the Shift Key (total Playalong range 3 1/2 octaves )
Hit the QWERTYU keys for drum sounds .
Press ENTER Key to shut a melody note off that is playing .
Press F1 for help during PlayBack.
Press Escape to stop Playing .
When stopped , you can freely type in your own chords to any
song, choose different styles etc. There is a tutorial for this
in the manual.
End of tutorial.
